Elena Gilbert is the series's protagonist. Suffering from the recent loss of her parents, Elena finds comfort in Stefan Salvatore, a vampire. Jeremy is her younger brother, but she learns later that she's adopted and that Jeremy is her biological cousin, as her biological father is the man she believed to be her uncle (her adopted father's brother, John). Caroline and Bonnie are her friends, and Matt is Elena's former boyfriend, who still carried a torch for her at the beginning of the series. As she is drawn to Stefan, she realizes that she also shares feelings for Stefan's malevolent brother Damon.
